Problems on Lake Sevan Debated

On June 13, in the city of Sevan the RA NA Standing Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Self-Government, Agriculture and Environment jointly with the International Republican Institute and the USAID organized a working consultation on the theme The Lake Sevan: Problems and Solutions , where the RA NA deputies, representatives of the executive body, as well as the NGOs being involved with environmental problems took part.

The Committee Chair Varazdat Karapetyan, highlighting the holding of similar debates, has noted that it is possible to raise and voice the problems existing in the sphere with the spcialists and propose relevant solutions.

The RA Minister of Environment Erik Grigoryan presented the state development policy of the Lake Sevan and the steps being taken.

The representatives of the sphere answered the participants’ questions, which related to the shutting down of the Hydro Power Plants and net-cage fish farming, the building of new reservoirs, the illegal buildings on the territory of the lake, the pollution of the peninsula territory and other problems.

Summing up the discussion, Varazdat Karapetyan noted that similar meetings would be organized once in two months to get acquainted with the procedure of the works.
